What is Biodiversity?

Looking outside, you might notice that a lot of things seem the same. While you might see only the same buildings, the same trees, and the same people, the truth is that diversity is inherent in nature – no matter what Wal-Mart wants you to believe. Instead of simply looking at the world as a chance to make everything the same, we have an opportunity to begin to look for ways to increase biodiversity in order to support all of the sameness that is around us. Being different is a good thing and trying to be different is an even better goal.

The Impact of Nature in Our World

Nature is something that exists around us, even if we never take notice. The trees, the birds, and other parts of nature allow us to continue to breathe in air and to continue to survive. Without the presence of animals and of wildlife, we should not be able to:

  • Eat – The foods we eat do not actually come from the cans in which they have been stored. Our foods come from plants, from animals, and from the products of plants and animals. Take those away and there’s little else that could sustain human life, if anything at all.
  • Breathe – Each time we breathe out, we are releasing carbon dioxide. When this happens, we are feeding the plants around us, which then turn that carbon dioxide into oxygen. And thus, we can breathe.
  • Drink – Water is something that we all need in order to survive. Without water, we could all die in three days.
  • Enjoy the outdoors – The plants allow for nature to be a hospitable place. Without the shade and the protection of plants on the ground, it would be difficult to be outside.
  • Have medicine – Most medicines are derived from plants or were once derived from plants before they were then creating artificially. Without nature around us, we might not have the cures that we have for everyday diseases.

How Biodiversity Protects Us

When we have more than one plant species and we strive to support many animals and plants, we are encouraging the planet to continue to sustain itself. The more plants that are available, the less likely it is that we will run out of food to eat or oxygen. Should one species die off, then another can take its place. When we begin to think that we need only one plant or animal to survive, this can set up a dangerous situation. If that one plant dies off, then we are left with nothing.

Supporting Biodiversity at Home

You can do your part to support biodiversity at home by taking the time to learn what plants are native to your area. Take steps to protect these plants by volunteering at local parks and environmental organizations. Together, you can begin to create laws that protect the plants and overall biodiversity. In addition, make sure that your own lawn and garden is filled with many plants so as to encourage more species to survive.
